Caught in a Hailstorm While Driving? Do This

What to do if hail starts while you are on the road, to protect yourself and limit damage to your car.

Hail can start with almost no warning while you are driving. Knowing what to do in the moment keeps you safer and can limit the damage.

Get off the road safely

Slow down and pull over where it is safe. Hail reduces visibility and makes roads slick. If you can reach a gas station canopy, parking garage, or overpass area safely and legally, use it.

Protect yourself first

Angle the car so hail hits the windshield, which is laminated and far tougher than your side windows. Keep everyone away from the glass, and stay buckled in case a window breaks.

After it passes

Document any damage with photos before you drive on, and avoid flooded roads. Then think about how to be ready next time, because there will be a next time.

Where HailShield comes in

HailShield is a portable hail protection cover in development right now, built for the millions of vehicles that never see a garage. It is designed to travel in your trunk and go on fast when the sky turns. The product is still being finalized, so this is a preview of what is coming. Want to be first to know when it launches?
